The Leisure Seeker by Michael Zadoorian is the story of an older couple, John and Ella, both of whom are sick with one thing or another. Ella is full of cancer, but is dedicated to taking care of her husband who has Alzheimer’s. This story follows John and Ella on a long road trip from their home in Michigan to Disneyland in California. Every small detail of the trip is explained through Ella’s eyes and the reader truly gets to see the reality of what it’s like to get older. Not only that, but to get older and be sick.
I found this story to be a little depressing. It had it’s funny moments, but I guess maybe because I am young, I don’t really want to think about how things could really be when I’m older. At least not yet. I would imagine that I would feel differently if I read this again later on in life. Overall, the book wasn’t bad, just not something I would have originally thought to read. I am interested in seeing how they portray this on the big screen. I guarantee after watching some trailers that I’ll be crying…a lot.
I’m actually giving this a 3.5star rating only because it was not what I was expecting, but it wasn’t necessarily bad either. It was somewhere in between good and “meh.”
